In the latest step of Wychwood' game fishing portfolio evolution, we're bringing premium back, baby!... say hello to Ionica.
For the eagle-eyed, Ionica may ring a bell - it was a fly reel name back in the early 2000s - but we've brought it back as a sub-brand that invokes the aspiration to venture further, backed up by quality and performance.
Why?
Wychwood has always delivered great value in the entry and mid-tier levels with products like Flow and Trufly, but with our design expertise and gifted team of product development anglers, we've taken the step to evolve the brand and push higher.... after all, our brand motto is "take your fishing further" and we're doing that with the Ionica range.
We're keeping it simple to start with, introducing two sizes of reel - 5/6 and 7/8 with accompanying spare spools - and a range of rods that cover the stillwater fishing sector.
Starting with the reel, it's a CNC-machined body, produced from 6061 aerospace-grade aluminium billet. With a hard-anodised, saltwater resistant finish, this is a design that not only look great but is set to withstand the rigours of serious abuse. Finished in Ionica's signature deep blue colour way, the sis a reel that performs AND looks amazing.
A precision-sealed drag system gives you full control during a fight with running fish, and the large arbour design ensures a fast retrieve and that line is stored perfectly to minimise memory, giving you better presentation each cast. There's a captive spool release for when you want to swap spools.
The rod range is one that focusses on the needs of anglers tackling stillwaters; three lengths - 9ft, 9ft 6in and 10ft - cover line weights between #5 and #8, which are the most commonly used across venues. The four-piece design runs throughout the Ionica series, and each rod is based around a blank featuring high-modulus carbon fibre that utilises advanced resin technology. In real terms this means a lighter rod that doesn't sacrifice power where it's needed - in this case the Ionica rods feature a medium/fast action - and doesn't compromise on blank recovery, enabling you to load the rod perfectly every time AND hit long-range takes quickly to set the hook.
Against the distinctive matte blue blank, 'oil slick' Sea Guides make this a stunning setup, and there's a durable, anodised and machined
